A little about Julie Poelchau

I am a certified Speech-Language Pathologist providing in-home assessment and therapy services in Golden, CO. I have over 15 years experience helping children learn to communicate. After working in the Boulder Valley School District for 9 years and having my own children, I have been focusing on working with toddlers and preschoolers and their families. I work with children at their level and use fun, child-centered therapy techniques to help them meet their goals.

Julie helped my 3-year-old daughter immensely. The speech therapy sessions started with a comprehensive test and report to help us understand where my daughter's articulation errors were. Julie always met my daughter where she was at as far as her mood that day and what she wanted to start with. Julie found creative ways to get my daughter to have fun and cooperate while she was practicing her speech therapy. Julie gets right down on the floor with her and remembers what toys and games she likes best. At the end of each visit, she provided written handouts which helped me understand what to continue to work on and helped facilitate some exercises in between the sessions. Julie helped my daughter master several sounds that were not fully developed yet. My daughter is more confident, talkative and able to communicate without me translating for her. Julie did a wonderful job working with my son before Kindergarten. With my schedule it didn't work out to use the Jeffco Preschool ST program but Julie came to our home or went to my son's school to work with him on his articulation and we had good results and he enjoyed it.

Cameron was 6 when he started working with Julie (his "mouth coach") to correct some fairly minor, but also unusual and challenging speech issues. Like Cameron, we too were pleased with Julie and appreciated her professional, knowledgeable and yet, laid back approach. To engage Cameron, Julie incorporated his interest in games, sports, and even raccoons into most sessions. And, because he was engaged, gains were evident after most appointments. To help us support Cameron's therapy and ensure his improvement, Julie developed a tailored home plan that was efficient and easy for us to implement between her visits. When we had questions, Julie answered them with a clear depth of knowledge and when progress slowed, she was quick to try something else to be sure we stayed on track.
Cameron was able to meet all of his goals after a summer of therapy and was ready to hit kindergarten running in the fall with confidence. We really couldn't have asked for a better experience."

She used multiple rigorous science based assessments, developed an effective treatment plan, and provided a technical write up of our son's evaluation. Julie also works wonderfully with children! She was very patient and caring while working with our son. She suggested many different options to keep our son on track, engaged, and to make the sessions fun. Our son progressed rapidly under the treatment plan and no longer has any issues with these sounds."
